Results from the Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory

چکیده
The Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory, located at an altitude of 2630m in the mountains of northern New Mexico, is a water-Cherenkov extensive air shower detector consisting of a 4800m covered pond instrumented with 723 PMTs. For improved sensitivity, 175 instrumented water tanks have recently been added surrounding the pond, covering an area of 40, 000m. Milagro continuously observes the entire overhead sky, making it the ideal instrument to perform an all-sky search for TeV gamma-ray sources. Results from this survey are presented here, as well as a search for TeV emission from the galactic plane, and a search for transient emission above ∼100 GeV from gamma ray bursts.

The Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory
Milagro is a unique water Cherenkov detector designed for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy. The water Cherenkov technique gives Milagro an unprecedented sensitivity and energy threshold. A deep detector layer is used to identify penetrating particles (muons and hadrons) present in hadron induced showers allowing for the rejection of backgrounds which substantially increases sensitivit...
متن کاملSearch for Very High Energy Emission from Satellite-triggered GRBs with the Milagro Observatory
The Milagro gamma-ray observatory employs a water Cherenkov detector to observe extensive air showers produced by high energy particles interacting in the Earth’s atmosphere. Milagro has a wide field of view (2 sr) and high duty cycle ( 90%) making it an ideal all-sky monitor of the northern hemisphere in the 100 GeV to 100 TeV energy range. More than 45 satellite-triggered gamma-ray bursts (GR...
متن کاملSurveying The TeV Sky With Milagro
A wide field of view, high duty factor TeV gamma-ray observatory is essential for studying TeV astrophysical sources, because most of these sources are either highly variable or are extended. Milagro is such a TeV detector and has performed the deepest survey of the Northern hemisphere sky. In addition to detecting the Crab Nebula and Mrk 421, which are known TeV sources, Milagro has made the f...

The Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory is the world’s first large-area water Cherenkov detector capable of continuously monitoring the sky at TeV energies. Located in the mountains of northern New Mexico, Milagro will perform an all sky survey of the Northern Hemisphere at energies between 250 GeV and 50 TeV. With a high duty-cycle ( 100%), large detector area ( 5000m), and wide field-of-view ( 1 sr...
متن کاملSearch for TeV Emission from Galaxy Clusters
Galaxy clusters are predicted to be emitters of high energy gamma rays due to the relativistic particles accelerated by merger and accretion shocks. The gamma rays are produced either by inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons or by high energy proton cascades due to p-p collisions. Some predictions of TeV fluxes from clusters such as Coma are near the sensitivity of current detect...
